Marianne Meyers began studying yoga in 1993 at Unity Woods Yoga Center and is strongly Iyengar-based. Working through lumbar scoliosis, Marianne is motivated by attaining skeletal alignment in her own practice and is drawn to yoga therapeutics and the body's structural integrity. With her mentor, yoga teacher Jill Pollet Cahn, Marianne continues to explore working with and against gravity in our daily lives and its subsequent effect on our nervous systems. Other yoga teacher influences include Stan Andrzejewski, John Schumacher, Carol Cavanaugh, Mary Pappas-Sandonas, Anne Wutchiett, and Rocky Delaplaine. She is honored to keep studying with Jenny Otto and being able to share in her evolving and innovative studies. A graduate of New England Conservatory of Music, Marianne spent her youth as a performer and works as an actor, storyteller, musician, and puppeteer. She brings commitment, knowledge, empowerment, and a strong sense of fun to her classes. Marianne is the only Body Balance Yoga® certified teacher in Northern Virginia.

Marianne's idiopathic lumbar scoliosis was discovered when she was 14. She was fitted for a Wilmington back brace, (a full body, hard plastic shell that she called her "exoskeleton"), and wore it 3 years for 23 hours a day. The belief at the time in the medical world was that the brace would discourage further curvature. In the meantime, Marianne's torso muscles atrophied with non-use which came to haunt her as she grew older. Marianne is devoted to discovering all she can about scoliosis and treatments and to find comfort and strength in our own bodies whatever our physical issues may be.

Scoliosis found in teenagers today continues with the same treatments 30 years later. Idiopathic means "of unknown cause." In her own case, Marianne believes that there is a neurological reason for her scoliosis. Recent research into idiopathic scoliosis is leaning toward neurological under-development/lack of signaling of the postural control centers in the brain stem.
